15 Questions to Ask Before Booking Dog Boarding Facility
The first time I looked for
boarding, I made the same mistake most of us make.
I looked at the photos.
Then the reviews.
Then the price.
And I almost booked.
Thankfully, something told me to visit first.
Within five minutes, I realised the photos and the reality were completely different.
Since then—and now after welcoming hundreds of dogs into our own home—I've realised something:
The quality of a boarding facility isn't judged by its website. It's judged by the answers it gives when you ask the right questions.
So before you book your dog's stay, here's a checklist I genuinely recommend.
1. Can I Visit Before Booking?
If the answer is no... Ask why.
A responsible boarding should be happy to let you see the environment before your dog's stay.
2. Who Will Actually Be Looking After My Dog?
Is it the owner?
A trained caregiver?
Multiple staff members?
Or someone you've never met?
Knowing who spends time with your dog matters.
3. How Many Dogs Stay Together?
More dogs doesn't always mean more fun.
Ask:
What's the maximum number of dogs?
Are dogs grouped by size or temperament?
Is there enough supervision?
4. Where Will My Dog Sleep?
Ask to see the sleeping area.
Will they sleep:
Inside the house?
In a kennel?
In an air-conditioned room?
On a comfortable bed?
Dogs sleep best when they feel secure.
5. Are Dogs Ever Left Alone?
Every boarding has moments when caregivers step away.
The important question is:
For how long?
6. What Happens During Emergencies?
This question tells you a lot.
Ask about:
Nearby veterinary clinics
Emergency transport
First-aid knowledge
How parents are informed
A good boarding already has a plan before anything happens.
7. How Often Will I Receive Updates?
Some parents love hourly updates.
Some prefer one update a day.
Ask:
Photos?
Videos?
WhatsApp?
Calls?
Clear communication builds trust.
8. What Is the Daily Routine?
Dogs love routine.
Ask about:
Meal times
Walks
Playtime
Rest periods
Toilet breaks
The more structured the routine, the easier the adjustment.
9. Can My Dog Bring Their Own Food?
The answer should almost always be yes.
Sudden food changes can upset digestion.
Consistency is always better.
10. What Vaccinations Are Required?
Responsible boarding protects every guest.
Ask which vaccinations are mandatory and whether vaccination records are checked.
11. How Do You Introduce New Dogs?
This is one of my favourite questions.
New dogs shouldn't simply be placed into a large group.
Proper introductions happen slowly.
Body language is observed.
Dogs are allowed to settle at their own pace.
12. What Happens If My Dog Doesn't Eat?
Many dogs skip a meal on Day One.
That's normal.
Ask how they encourage nervous eaters and when they'll contact you if your dog continues refusing food.
13. Can My Dog Take Medication?
If your dog has:
epilepsy
allergies
arthritis
anxiety medication
make sure the boarding is comfortable administering it.
14. Have You Handled My Dog's Breed Before?
Every breed has different personalities.
A Golden Retriever.
A Beagle.
A Husky.
An Indie.
They're all wonderful—but they all communicate differently.
Experience matters.
15. Does This Place Feel Right?
This isn't really a question.
It's a feeling.
When you walk in...
Are the dogs relaxed?
Do they seem comfortable?
Is the environment calm?
Does the caregiver genuinely know the dogs?
Sometimes your instincts notice things before your brain does.
Trust them.
A Few Red Flags 🚩
Personally, I'd think twice if:
You aren't allowed to visit.
Nobody asks about your dog's behaviour.
Vaccination records aren't required.
Dogs appear stressed or constantly barking.
The focus is only on price.
Questions are avoided.
The place looks overcrowded.
Green Flags ✅
Look for places where:
Dogs are treated like family.
Caregivers know every dog's personality.
Meet & Greets are encouraged.
Updates are shared regularly.
The environment feels calm.
Safety comes before convenience.
One Last Thought
When pet parents visit our home, they often apologise for asking "too many questions."
I always tell them:
There is no such thing as too many questions when it comes to your dog.
In fact...
The parents who ask the most questions are usually the most responsible ones.
Your dog can't interview their boarding facility.
So that's your job.
Take your time.
Visit.
Observe.
Ask.
And choose the place where both you and your dog feel comfortable.
Because good boarding isn't about finding a place to leave your dog.
It's about finding people you'd trust to care for family.
